Notes: Duke, a volunteer from Africa who came to defend Ukraine in 2023, lost his right leg at the hip, right arm at the shoulder, and left hand at the wrist when his vehicle struck a mine before being attacked by FPV drones. He also suffered TBI, burns, and shrapnel wounds. A specialized finger prosthesis ($25,000) will allow him to regain independence and begin using his leg prosthesis. That's less than one-third of the total cost left to raise! This prosthesis is essential for Duke to begin rebuilding his life. Without it, he cannot eat independently, shop for himself, or live on his own. With it, he can regain the ability to perform everyday tasks and take the first steps toward independence. Today, America celebrates 250 years of independence. Freedom and democracy are not static. They require people willing to protect them. Two hundred and fifty years ago, the United States was a young nation fighting against one of the most powerful empires in the world. Many believed the cause was hopeless. Yet history reminds us that ordinary people, united by a belief in freedom and willing to sacrifice for it, can achieve what once seemed impossible. People from around the world crossed an ocean because they believed the American cause was worth defending. Among them was the Marquis de Lafayette, a young French officer who volunteered to fight alongside the Continental Army, not because America was his home, but because he believed some ideals were greater than borders. This Fourth of July, we’d like to introduce you to someone who made a similar choice. Duke came from Africa to Ukraine in 2023 to defend a country that wasn’t his own, but has since become his home. He wasn’t fighting for politicians or politics. He was fighting for children sleeping in bomb shelters, families driven from their homes, and people who could not protect themselves. Since then, he has fought on the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Sumy fronts alongside Ukrainians and volunteers from around the world. A few months ago, his vehicle struck a mine before being attacked by FPV drones. Duke lost his right leg at the hip, his right arm at the shoulder, and his left hand at the wrist, along with suffering a traumatic brain injury, burns, and multiple shrapnel wounds. His greatest hope now is a specialized finger prosthesis that will allow him to regain independence and begin learning to use his leg prosthesis. His unit has already raised more than half of the $25,000 cost, but approximately $12,000 still remains. We’ve accomplished things together that once seemed impossible— a drone gun for the Marines, a weapon and ammunition for Third Assault, a car and drone jammer for Team Krumpet, and a vehicle and winter gear for Vyr. Those goals once seemed impossible too. But when we all come together, the impossible becomes possible. Maybe your church, Rotary Club, workplace, or neighborhood could host a small fundraiser. Maybe you could pledge to raise just $120 from friends and family — that’s 1% of the total cost. Can you ask 10 people for $12? Small acts of generosity, multiplied by many, can change a life. This Fourth of July, as we celebrate our own freedom, may we also remember those who continue to fight for theirs. Freedom is not only ours to celebrate — it is ours to defend. Today, America celebrates 250 years of independence. Freedom and democracy are not static. They require people willing to protect them. Two hundred and fifty years ago, the United States was a young nation fighting against one of the most powerful empires in the world. Many believed the cause was hopeless. Yet history reminds us that ordinary people, united by a belief in freedom and willing to sacrifice for it, can achieve what once seemed impossible. People from around the world crossed an ocean because they believed the American cause was worth defending. Among them was the Marquis de Lafayette, a young French officer who volunteered to fight alongside the Continental Army, not because America was his home, but because he believed some ideals were greater than borders. This Fourth of July, we’d like to introduce you to someone who made a similar choice. Duke came from Africa to Ukraine in 2023 to defend a country that wasn’t his own, but has since become his home. He wasn’t fighting for politicians or politics. He was fighting for children sleeping in bomb shelters, families driven from their homes, and people who could not protect themselves. Since then, he has fought on the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Sumy fronts alongside Ukrainians and volunteers from around the world. A few months ago, his vehicle struck a mine before being attacked by FPV drones. Duke lost his right leg at the hip, his right arm at the shoulder, and his left hand at the wrist, along with suffering a traumatic brain injury, burns, and multiple shrapnel wounds. His greatest hope now is a specialized finger prosthesis that will allow him to regain independence and begin learning to use his leg prosthesis. His unit has already raised more than half of the $25,000 cost, but approximately $12,000 still remains. We’ve accomplished things together that once seemed impossible— a drone gun for the Marines, a weapon and ammunition for Third Assault, a car and drone jammer for Team Krumpet, and a vehicle and winter gear for Vyr. Those goals once seemed impossible too. But when we all come together, the impossible becomes possible. Maybe your church, Rotary Club, workplace, or neighborhood could host a small fundraiser. Maybe you could pledge to raise just $120 from friends and family — that’s 1% of the total cost. Can you ask 10 people for $12? Small acts of generosity, multiplied by many, can change a life. This Fourth of July, as we celebrate our own freedom, may we also remember those who continue to fight for theirs. Freedom is not only ours to celebrate — it is ours to defend.
